Le Bistro at Radisson St Julian’s. New chef. New menu. New experience.

Updated: Jul 2, 2023

The charming Le Bistro at Radisson St Julian’s is back in business and ready for some action.

Le Bistro is the main restaurant at Radisson Blu Resort in Saint Julians, Malta. The interior décor is warm in color and has a pleasantly elegant look. It retains the formality of a hotel restaurant but does have its character.

Having visited and reviewed Le Bistro before, we knew the place and had an idea of what to expect and hoped for something better this time. An intimate ambiance makes up for the lack of view, and we already knew Le Bistro is quite a good choice for a romantic dinner for your loved one.

Le Bistro offers several options on the menu, including options for those of you who are vegetarian or vegan. Warm homemade bread was a nice and delicious way to start the evening. It’s these little things that make an experience enjoyable. The warm bread, the homemade olive oil, and the in-house tomato puree ensured that.

Somehow, we got the same table as last time, giving us all the privacy we wanted. The staff at Le Bistro was very welcoming as always. Some great service from Rachana accompanied us throughout the evening. She took excellent care of us and made sure everything was in order.

The place recently welcomed new Hungarian chef Sandor, who brought new ideas and a revamped menu. The concept supports local farmers and fishers with weekly specials that celebrate local, sustainable ingredients with a Mediterranean feel. These recent tweaks in the menu have been getting excellent reviews. An extensive wine list accompanies the menu.

For the starter, we chose the San Daniele Ham with burrata, which was soft, smooth, and with an aroma of fresh milk, just as it should be. The ham and burrata were accompanied by a considerable amount of rucola and delightfully sweet figs. It’s a good thing we had some bread left over because it served a great bed for a very creamy burrata. The other starter consisted of a hearty portion of well-filled aubergine panciotti with tomato sauce.

A simple pan-seared duck breast with crispy, golden-brown skin was our first main of the evening. Of course, how much this meat is cooked is normally a question of taste. We asked for ours to be medium-rare. Although just slightly more on the medium side for my taste, it was enjoyable.

There was nothing to complain about when it came to the lamb shanks. The meat was so tender it just fell off the bone with its aromatic flavors delighting my taste buds. Some quite buttery mashed potato accompanied the lamb. Overall, this was a very tasty and good dish that would easily be the star of many restaurants.

The dessert consisted of a butternut squash mousse with honeycomb and ginger cookies. The mousse was round and firm (yes, we know), smooth and velvety, and tasted exactly like that. Not that sweet, almost on the verge of being savory.

On the other hand, the ginger cookies were sweet, almost too sweet. At the same time, the honeycomb was something very enjoyable, as always. We were not very keen on the presentation. However, this was a nice way to finish the dinner.

Le Bistro is open from Monday to Thursday between 6pm and 10pm, and Friday to Saturday from 6pm till 10:30pm. Free parking is available for all restaurant patrons, so there is no need for any extended search. Le Bistro recommends booking a table to avoid disappointment.
