Our evening at Broadside Terrace. The perfect summer spot?

With its panoramic views and summer-themed menu, Broadside Terrace might just be that perfect summer spot you have been looking for!

The summer months bring with it not only higher temperatures but also longer evenings, which are meant to be enjoyed near the sea, looking at amazing sunset views. Perhaps this is the real season to be jolly, but we might be wrong.

In any case, intent on enjoying one such evening, Charlene and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Broadside Terrace, which forms part of the Corinthia Hotel in St George’s Bay. Broadside Terrace is a trendy open-air resto-lounge with ample seating space and a great panoramic view of the sea.

Of course, we made reservations, and we suggest you do the same if you plan on visiting. We arrived at around 7 pm and soon after the place was full. The great thing about here is that whilst looking for parking in St Julians normally ruins your evening before it even starts, we found ample parking within the Corinthia Hotel perimeters.

No need to worry about any fees since dining at Broadside Terrace ensures your parking fee is covered by them.

The journey starts at the entrance of the Corinthia Hotel, past the reception and towards the pool areas. A few steps and you’ll get the first glimpse of the bay and then of Broadside Terrace, where you will be greeted by some very attentive staff and shown to your table (we suggest booking).

With a quick glimpse at the menu, you will immediately notice that the main feature here is the drinks, particularly their signature cocktail menu. The sizable central bar area certainly suggests so. The drinks menu is accompanied by a good number of food options, mostly inspired by the summer months and prepared in an open-air kitchen.

The drinks menu at Broadside Terrace is mostly focused on wines and spirits, with a very good selection of cocktails, as well as a specialised Gin selection, perfect for the summer atmosphere. All signature cocktails are priced at around €12.

Broadside Terrace offers Happy Hour from Monday to Sunday between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm, during which you get 50% off on cocktails and drinks. This gets you geared up for dinner later on in the evening when the sun goes down and the place (and bay around it) gets all lit up.

Feeling very romantic, Charlene opted for L’Ultimo Bacio (the last kiss), which consisted of Gin, Apricot Brandy and a Passion fruit puree and which was reasonably priced at €9 given the quality. The Apricot and passion fruit tastes were prominent but well combined and overall very enjoyable.

Me, feeling a bit exotic, opted for a Persian Passion (priced at €12.50) which forms part of the signature cocktail and is composed of Belvedere Vodka, elderflower liqueur, pumpkin puree, fresh lemon juice, orange juice, grenadine syrup.

The taste was very zesty because of the lemon, orange juice and grenadine syrup, with a nice kick coming from the elderflower liqueur. The pumpkin puree is very subtle but gives the cocktail a nice touch.

The menu gives a variety of options, but not overwhelmingly so. Spoiled for choice but not exactly sure what to order, Davor, impeccably served us throughout the rest of our stay. For starters we opted for the Charred Swordfish Chunks and the Charred Shish Toouk Chicken, the latter recommended to us by Davor since it is his favourite dish.

We were glad we listened to him. The chicken was very tender, with a charred, slightly spicy taste which reminded us of Middle Eastern cuisine. The Swordfish was delicious, however, the sauce was very runny and not that pleasing. The fish on the other hand was perfectly salted and full of flavour.

Since we were having main courses, we were also brought the Mediterranean Meze, which is served on a complimentary basis with any main course you order. We also enjoyed the Mediterranean Meze last summer and thought it was a perfect starter before the main courses. We also think it is the perfect accompaniment if you feel like having a small nibble with your drinks.

This Mediterranean Meze features a selection of four mezes, namely the hummus, mahamra (based on harissa, for you lovers of spice), tzatziki, and baba ghanoush (made with aubergines). The four mezes are accompanied by a healthy portion of freshly baked tandoori bread, so you can dip in and enjoy.

The hummus is very heavy on Tahini, which we enjoyed but be wary if you are not a fan of Tahini. The aubergine dip was too light on flavour in our opinion, but still enjoyable. The Tzatziki dip was very zesty and high on the citrus flavours. Very summery. Very refreshing. The spicy dip was not overwhelmingly spicy, but with a good aftertaste. The taste of olives in it was predominant though.

The first main course was grilled Scottish lamb chops, which come with a rosemary marinade. The lamb chops were very well cooked. The rosemary marinade was very refreshing compared to the strong taste of the lamb. Although I’m not a huge fan of lamb, I still thought this dish was delicious!

The second main course was the Fish and Shellfish Mixed Grill, which comprised swordfish, meagre, grouper and king prawns. The swordfish was pleasant (just like our starter had been) but the grilled meagre was our favourite. A delicious fillet of juicy fish.

The grouper was enjoyable but far from memorable, as were the king prawns. The mains came with a salad, bulgur with lentils which frankly were overcooked and lacked flavour, and some delicious crispy roast potatoes.

By now we were quite full but still had enough space to share a dessert. On Davor’s advice we opted for the Raspberry Mousse and yet again, his suggestion was spot on. This dessert was sweet, but not too much. This satisfied us both since Charlene has quite the sweet tooth whilst I am not too keen on anything too sweet!

What we liked the most about the atmosphere at Broadside Terrace is the sheer sense of tranquillity it manages to give you, especially considering how hectic places such as St Julians and Paceville have become. Add to that a great selection of drinks and good food, and finding a place for your next summer outing should now be easy.
